Stephen Harper has called an election and by all accounts, he plans to come out swinging.
What is he afraid of? The Liberals are in disarray and no other party really has a chance at forming a majority. Why is Harper in such a hurry to call an election?
Two words.
Barack Obama.

Do you mean he's afraid of Barack? In what way? I think he smells (as you say) a really weak and divided opponent and is going to capitalize on it to win some seats.
Would be nice if he could do it without playing up this fire-side, tweed-wearing, family man BS though...
I don't mean he's afraid of a Democratic government south of the border, or Barack Obama's policy. It was more a reference to his charisma, his popularity, and his public image.
Canadians watch a lot of American TV and many are following this election campaign with interest. These same people are inevitably going to compare Obama and Harper.
Harper hasn't got much going for him in the way of personal appeal. He's a policy geek, which makes him an effective politician, not a well-loved one. I don't think his ordinary Joe campaign persona is going to fool anyone. Obama reminds Canadians of past politicians (such as Trudeau, or even Brian Mulroney) that were much more comfortable in the position of public figure. He reminds Canadians of what we sorely lack from the leaders of all our major political parties.
I think that he has good reason to try and secure a majority government before the next American election, because he may not have another chance to do so.
